Her father, Jonas Knechtel was a tool and die maker for Dominion Button Manufacturers. He was one of 12 children. He was also the son of a well-known architect who designed the Walpher Hotel, Courtland Ave school, and the Economical Block. Jonas and his wife lived at 29 Glascow. Before that, they lived at 86 Wilhelm Street.

Eleanor’s mother was Louise Schwalm, the daughter of a Baptist minister.

Eleanor was the second youngest child. Catherine, Madeline, Ruth, Paul and then Grace being the youngest
