Henry Frederick William Wolfhard, (known as Harry)

Harry is the child of Henry Wolfhard.

At the age of 16, Harry completed a business course and started working as an office clerk at the Merchants Rubber in Berlin, Ontario.
In 1917, Harry was transferred to office manager at the Elmira Rubber Co. and then Factory manager in 1919, a branch of the Merchants.

He married Duretta Leslie in 1919 and they moved to Elmira. Marriage certificate


After renting a few places in Elmira and Floradale , they built a house on the corner of Arthur and Ernst Street, a lovely stucco home with green trim. Their daughter Leslie was born shortly after moving in. Their son , Bill was born there in 1923.
In 1929, Harry was transferred back to Merchants in Kitchener as Factory manager. With issues of commuting in the winter, they sold their house to Oscar Weichel, Elmira’s postmaster and moved back to Kitchener. They rented a house from his father at 473 Queen south and later purchased it from him.
In 1939, during the Kitchener Royal visit of the King and Queen, on behalf of the Dominion Rubber Co. he presented gifts of rubber boots for Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.



In 1942 Harry was promoted to production manager. In 1944 he became assistant general manager and transferred to Merchants’ Head office in Montreal and then general manager of the footwear division in 1949. The transfer to Montreal was to be a 5 year post but continued until he retired.
They lived at 108 Dufferin St., now called Rue Dufferin in Hampstead Quebec, part of Montreal, near Westmount. Both Hampstead and Westmount were English speaking.

They did a lot of travelling. They were at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953 and watched from the balcony. Other stops included France.

In 1955, Harry became Vice President and GM of the footwear and general products divisions. He retired from Dominion Rubber in 1958 and moved back to Waterloo. While they lived in Montreal, he continued to own the house at 473 Queen South and sold it shortly before moving back to Kitchener. They also owned a rental property across the street at 474 Queen

In 1958 they built a house at 240 Stanley Drive, Waterloo, backing onto the 1st fairway of the Westmount Golf and Country Club. Harry was one of the charter members of Westmount when it was built in 1931. Westmount Golf Club Share
Port Dalhousie (now St. Catharines)
Around 1932, they bought a cottage previously owned by the Dominion Rubber Co. used for its employees. It was at 48 Dalhousie Avenue, overlooking Lake Ontario on a high bank. There was a small cottage on the lot and they sold the building to their friends, Fred and Ruth Meunier. They moved the cottage in 1940 to the other side of the property and built an new cottage for themselves, sharing the property. Port Dalhousie cottage
While living in Montreal from 1944 to 1958, they would summer at the cottage with family. They owned the cottage until Harry died at home in 1982 from complications from the Shingles virus.
